George H. Everett served in the Civil War as a private in Company C of the 44th Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. His diary contains observations of daily life of a Union private from camp in Readville, Mass. (Aug. 29, 1862) to duty in North Carolina (Feb. 3, 1863).
